Nicolas Gavoille holds a Ph.D in Economics from the University of Rennes 1 (France) and has been a core member of the Department of Economics at SSE Riga since 2015.

Says Nicolas: "Just looking at the types of competencies that are sought from our students on the labour market, there is a huge demand for people that are able to work with data. But only working with data is not enough: the main thing is to extract the relevant information out of these enormous data collections. It's to be able to know what is possible and what is not possible to do with data.”  To SSE Riga Bachelor students he teaches courses that he believes build these skills:  mathematics; econometrics; managerial economics; and game theory.

Research papers by Nicolas have been published in journals such as the European Economic Review and the European Journal of Political Economy, and he is a member of the editorial board of the Baltic Journal of Economics as well as Treasurer of the Baltic Economic Association. His current research topic lies at the intersection of public and labour economics, where he applies econometrics and machine learning techniques to study tax evasion and its consequences on labour market outcomes.
