Geopolitics Unscripted: Sanctions and the Russian War Economy — What Has Worked, What Has Not, and What Comes Next

The Stockholm School of Economics in Riga invites you to a public lecture "Sanctions and the Russian War Economy — What Has Worked, What Has Not, and What Comes Next" with Yuliia Pavytska, the Head of the Sanctions Hub of Excellence at the KSE Institute. Economic sanctions have been a key tool in responding to Russia’s war against Ukraine, but how effective have they been?

This lecture is part of the Geopolitics Unscripted series and will look at how sanctions have affected Russia’s economic resilience and wartime adaptation. It will also explore the challenges of enforcement, loopholes, and international coordination. Participants will gain a broader understanding of the role sanctions play in responding to modern geopolitical conflict.


Yuliia Pavytska

Since the outbreak of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Yuliia Pavytska has specialized in sanctions policy, focusing on the assessment of sanctions effectiveness, analysis of the Russian economy, and research on energy sanctions and the shadow fleet. Her work also encompasses the development of evidence-based sanctions proposals aimed at enhancing the impact of international restrictive measures.

As Head of the Sanctions Hub of Excellence at the KSE Institute, Yuliia Pavytska leads analytical and policy-oriented research on sanctions. KSE Institute is an analytical center at the Kyiv School of Economics. It specializes in analytics, consulting, research, develops strategies and recommendations for supporting a strong and innovative economy of Ukraine. She coordinates the production of high-quality analysis and policy recommendations designed to support decision-makers, while also engaging with key stakeholders and contributing to media outreach to amplify the impact of the research. 

Yuliia joined KSE Institute in 2020. Prior to February 2022, she worked as a policy researcher on a broad range of topics, including labor market dynamics, agricultural policy, European integration, and the development of sectoral strategies for Ukrainian public authorities.

Before joining KSE Institute, Yuliia worked at the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine (2019–2020), where she contributed to economic strategy development and labor market policy design.

She holds a Master’s degree in Economics from the Kyiv School of Economics (2019).
