Alumni Discussion Club with Nicolas Gavoille: How Latvian exporters adapted to the war in Ukraine and sanctions

Tuesday, November 25, 2025, 18:00 – 19:30
SSE Riga, Room 303

SSE Riga Rector Anders Paalzow invites all graduates to an on-site Alumni Discussion Club event featuring Nicolas Gavoille. The discussion is titled “How Latvian exporters adapted to the war in Ukraine and sanctions.

Since February 2022, the European Union has implemented a series of sanction packages targeting the Russian economy. These successive measures imposed export bans on an ever-expanding list of goods, ranging from orchids to dual-use items. As a result, European firms trading with Russia before the war faced a large and sudden trade shock. The shock was particularly severe for Latvia, where Russia remained among the country’s top five trading partners before the invasion. This talk examines how Latvian firms adapted to this disruption, using detailed firm-level administrative data. How did trade with Russia evolve? Did the shock affect firm outcomes beyond trade performance? And is there evidence of sanction circumvention?
