Context

We live and work in an era of accelerating change. We operate increasingly in a more complex environment where virtual and remote teams, matrix organisations and multiple stake-holders are the norm. We do this across national and organisational cultures and often in a language not our own. This presents exciting new opportunities and troubling challenges. The old certainties of fixed-line reporting and clearly defined organisational parameters no longer present the clear pathways we once relied on.

You need time to build influence whereas persuasion and negotiation skills are techniques that you can apply at a specific moment. The more influence you have, the easier it is to persuade – and you need to develop both areas.
