Media Centre: Summer School on Investigative Reporting
Successful investigative reporting requires skills, and who is better to teach these skills than experienced and seasoned craftsmen; colleagues with globally- recognised reputations. The SSE Riga Centre for Media Studies is proud to present journalists of international standing at the “Summer School” in Riga.

The Summer School will take place from Aug 16th – 18th 2012. Journalists from abroad have the opportunity to participate in a pre- seminar on Aug 15th on the politics and the economy in the Baltic States.
The seminars and workshops will be very specifically focused on three major areas, instead of on a variety of subjects. We will focus on Basic Investigative Reporting; Corruption and Organised Crime; and Computer Assisted Reporting. Lecturers from Sarajevo, Maryland, London, Copenhagen, Riga and Stockholm:

Deborah Nelson will be the main speaker on investigative reporting. The Philadelphia Inquirer recently labelled her as: ”… one of the most experienced, talented investigative journalists alive.” |

Drew Sullivan and Miranda Patrucic from Sarajevo, represent the Center for Investigative Reporting in Bosnia-Herzegovina. They are the best in the business, according to their colleagues, in how to discover and reveal organised crime and corruption. |

Brigitte Alfter from Copenhagen knows how to find information in the maze of websites within the EU and on the web in general. She also works with cross- border reporting. |

Inga Springe from Riga has founded Re:Baltica, The Baltic Center for investigative journalism. It is a success story that crosses the borders in the region. |

Helena Bengtsson, CAR, is a database editor with years of impressive results as a team leader at The Center for Public Integrity, Washington DC. |

Gavin MacFadyen, Director of the Centre for Investigative Journalism in London, UK, brings some 40 years of experience in this line of work to his key note speech. He will also talk about corporate and business investigations. |
The course is presented in cooperation with Anne-Marie and Gustaf Ander Foundation, Philip Merrill College of Journalism; the University of Maryland, USA; and City University, London, UK.
Fee and accommodation
Fee: € 330 (Baltic journalists can apply for a scholarship).
Accommodation: Hotel Valdemars (http://valdemars.lv/hotel-Riga) and Hotel Alberts (http://www.alberthotel.lv/) are located close to the school and they have an agreement with SSE Riga for a reduced price (see in programme).
Meals: Lunches and one dinner are included.
