Open Lecture by Prof. Axel Gosseries: Why sustainability and intergenerational justice are not the same thing

The Centre for Sustainable Business at SSE Riga invites you to a guest lecture by professor Axel Gosseries from Université Catholique de Louvain on the topic - Why sustainability and intergenerational justice are not the same thing.

8:00 - 9:00 Friday 09/03/2018

SSE Riga, Strelnieku 4a, Soros Auditorium

In this lecture, professor Axel Gosseries will contrast four different accounts of the demands of intergenerational justice. He will show that they make a big difference in practice. He will then confront them with the idea of sustainability. The goal is to show that, contrary to what we often assume, the demands of intergenerational justice and those of sustainability don’t necessarily coincide.

Axel Gosseries is a Maitre de recherches at the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique, a Professeur extraordinaire at Louvain University where he heads the Hoover Chair in Economic and Social Ethics (UCL, Belgium). He is also a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Institute for Future Studies (Stockholm) and member of the Czech Academy of Science. He holds a PhD in philosophy (Louvain, 2000) and an LL.M. He has spend time abroad doing research (Oxford, Canberra, Montreal, Collegium Budapest, Bergen, Harvard, Melbourne, Onati, Prague, Lisbon) and teaching (Bergen, Bern, Montevideo, Di Tella (Buenos Aires), Rio (UFF), Krakow, Bucharest, Braga, Tbilissi, Yerevan). He works in the field of political philosophy and especially on (1) issues of intergenerational justice, (2) the division of distributive labour, (3) the political philosophy of information.

He is the author of Penser la justice entre les générations (Aubier-Flammarion, 2004) and the co-editor of four books including on issues of intellectual property issues (Palgrave 2008), intergenerational justice (OUP, 2009) and intergenerational governance (OUP, 2016).
