Exchange Programmes
During the last year of studies students can either stay in SSE Riga and specialize in selected fields, or spend a semester abroad by choosing an exchange program (Erasmus, HESP or bilateral agreements). Undergraduates are encouraged to take this opportunity as it contributes heavily to personal development and ensures a wider professional perspective. Each semester approximately 30 exchange students are invited to SSE Riga, and each autumn 30-40 third year SSE Riga students leave for exchange for one semester.
Erasmus
SSE Riga has an Erasmus University Charter. This gives the opportunity for SSE Riga students to study at a partner University for 3 to 12 months as exchange students, and for teaching staff to deliver lectures for up to 1 week/8 teaching hours at a partner university. Administration can have up to one week of exchange in order to exchange experiences with colleagues at partner institutions.
Higher Education Support Program (HESP)
SSE Riga is also a member of the international Higher Education Support Program (HESP). Inter alia this means that students, faculty, administrative and library staff who are nationals of Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and Mongolia (the HESP region) can apply for HESP Mobility grants to visit SSE Riga. More information as well as applications forms can be found at the HESP site.
Incoming Exchange Students
There is no tuition fee for incoming exchange students. However, exchange students have to cover other costs, e.g., traveling costs, costs for a visa, insurance costs, living expenses, including accommodation, costs for handouts and printouts.
SSE Riga can offer accommodation for about 80 EUR per month. The compulsory payment for handouts and printouts for one semester is about 110 EUR. Overall monthly expenditures while living in Riga are about 400 EUR.
Exchange Programmes
The Exchange Programmes at SSE Riga are open to students (in some cases also to faculty and administrators) from partner institutions; students in the Lifelong Learning Programme – Erasmus Student and Teacher Mobility; and the Higher Education Support Program (HESP).
Courses and Evaluation
Provided that the incoming exchange student has sufficient knowledge, he/she is free to choose between courses in the first, second or third year of the SSE Riga B.Sc.programme. Teaching at SSE Riga is very intensive and interactive and an average day involves at least eight hours of work at school (lectures, seminars, assignment, reports). Successful studies require a full-time commitment.
The courses at SSE Riga run one or two at a time. During the courses, which usually run for 3-6 weeks, students are assessed continuously. Furthermore written exams are given in each course. Exchange students are not allowed to take re-exams. Academic performance is evaluated according to a 200-point scale: 0-99=fail; 100-139=pass; 140-159=pass with merit; 160-200=excellent. The school uses the European Credit Transfer (ECTS) system. Hence, the grades are converted to ECTS grades and the work load of the courses is assessed according to ECTS credits, where one full working week at SSE Riga equals 1.5 ECTS credits.
