School Education for Sustainable Development

The Centre for Sustainable Business at SSE Riga, in cooperation with the Swedish Institute and the Embassy of Sweden in Latvia, organised the first Baltic school conference on education for sustainable development.

On February 21-22, 2013, more than 150 school teachers, university representatives and experts attended the conference at SSE Riga. The objective of the conference was to promote a debate on how to efficiently integrate the principles of sustainable development in the content of educational curricula.

At the conference, organizers aimed to begin the discussion in the Baltic region on how to integrate education for sustainable development in school curricula. So far, there has not been an integrated approach to education for sustainable development in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, and we recognize the need to illustrate how to link a traditional framework of subject-based education to a more holistic educational approach of learning about sustainability, as well as to form and strengthen a network of experts who are working with issues of education for sustainable development.
