Overview
The first class of students was admitted to SSE Riga in 1994. Since then more than 1,500 students have entered through the doors of the School’s Art Nouveau building on Strelnieku iela 4a.
SSE Riga was established in 1993 as a joint project between a Swedish institution of higher education and the Latvian Government with the purpose of offering managerial training in business.
When SSE Riga was established, it was decided that the ownership should be transferred to a Latvian owner after a given time period. At a ceremony on September 10, 2010 in Riga, the final transfer of shares to the SSE Riga Foundation was completed.
Among the three founders of the SSE Riga Foundation are two strong academic institutions, SSE and the University of Latvia, both being leaders in their respective countries. The third founder is the SSE Riga Alumni Association, whose commitment to SSE Riga is manifested by the almost 70 000 Euros raised during past month which will be used for need-based scholarships to SSE Riga BSc students.
The new ownership structure provides a foundation for future development and has been made possible through generous financial support from the three leading Swedish banks active in the Baltic countries; Nordea, SEB and Swedbank, and the Johan Björkman Foundation. Their support has played a pivotal role in ensuring a solid basis for the future development of SSE Riga. Furthermore, the Latvian Government as well as the long-term benefactors of the School, TeliaSonera and the “Anne-Marie and Gustaf Anders stiftelse för medieforskning”, will all continue to support the School. The Swedish Government will support SSE Riga through a number of scholarships open to students from non-EU Eastern European countries.
